Hussein and rebels report end war pact amid Amman fighting

Rebels announced a four point plan to end the conflict and King Hussein said Jordan had foiled a plan to destroy the country. Observers reported Syrian forces retreating. guerrilla sources claimed control of parts of northern Jordan including Irbid Ramtha and the liberated zone near Amman. The announcement came with a mediator group and a statement that civil war could end after a major tank battle with invading Syrian forces driven back into Syria.

A rock throwing crowd near East 21st Street and East Avenue harassed police responding to a shotgun incident at Anchor Inn. Black River Sunday cleanup inspires a hometown song

Elyria’s Black River cleanup on Sunday October 11 runs from Route 10 to Route 254. Ruth Renkle of Elyria wrote the theme song to boost the effort sponsored by The Chronicle Telegram and the Elyria Jaycees. Project chair Jim Parks notes 20 trailers donated by Lucas Radiator and Trailer Service along with 70 volunteers from North Ridgeville, Northwood Junior High, and Brookside High School groups.

Dump blast injuries worker in poor condition at Elyria hospital

Robert E. Alston, 45, back hoe operator of 121 Blake St., remained in poor condition at Elyria Memorial Hospital after a 9:30 a.m. explosion at the Elyria City Landfill. A ruptured 10 inch Columbia Gas line sparked a fire ignited perhaps by a nearby rubbish fire. Firefighters shut off the leak around 1 p.m. and left the scene about 2:30 p.m. No damage to the landfill or surroundings was reported.

Four Women Shot Dead by Gunman in Albany Labor Dept

A gunman opened fire in the Labor Department building on the Albany campus, killing four women employees before turning the rifle on himself. Coroner reports describe a chaotic scene as the assailant, believed to be a department employee on medical leave, stayed in a stairwell before dying. The incident occurred on the fourth and fifth floors, with one victim serving as a receptionist. Identification of victims and the gunman was not immediately released.

Ridgeville school pact approved ends strike

The North Ridgeville school board and OAPSE reached a 1 a.m. agreement restoring bus, cafeteria, and custodial services. Non-certified workers will gain 18 cents more in total by next July 1 with 40 cents hourly increases over two years retroactive to July 1. Custodians in large buildings get 29 cents extra this year, others 24 to 26 cents depending on building size. The strike ends with ratification by 55 of 65 members.

Milk prices in the Lorain County area are set to rise after Oct 1 as Milk Inc. raises producer rates to 6.91 per hundredweight from 6.66. Elyria dairies expect retail costs to increase but exact changes depend on the producer rise and adjustments to stay competitive with regional dairies.

Rail pact agreement predicted

A federal mediator predicted a settlement today in a long 11 year dispute over firemen on diesel freight locomotives to avert a nationwide rail strike. Negotiators met at 10:30 a.m. to review federal proposals. details were not released. Fred Livingston led the emergency mediation board and expressed confidence.

Vega minicar risks damage from automatic car washes

Detroit AP report says the Chevrolet Vega may be damaged by conveyor car wash systems because its undercarriage sits one inch below the five inch minimum for safe passage. The Automatic Car Wash Association International issued a bulletin warning operators in 49 states and 15 foreign countries. GM says they are addressing the issue, noting it concerns only a single underside point.
