Five women in Old World garb cash a tavern till for about 1100 dollars during a dining room scam on August 22. A 70 year old Elyria woman was fleeced by a roof repair scam demanding 3000 payment and an 800 check was cashed after she stopped payment. A noon influx of dark skinned con artists at Alesci's prompted police to label them gypsies. Authorities caution this is a nationwide criminal subculture with varied swindles.
