Poor to fair hatch in western Lake Erie across several species
The Interior’s Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife and Ohio DNR report that the 1971 hatch in western Lake Erie is generally poor to fair for most species. Walleye, white bass, and yellow perch show mixed results while smelt and some forage fish indicate better hatching. Environmental factors like cold springs reduced early spawning, but adult perch remain abundant for future catches.
