Powell saga shadows a legislator’s hidden fortune

Legislator known for racing lobby ties faced scrutiny as a defunct mud guards and tires firm surfaced in a federal case. A partner, Seymour Emalfarb of Highland Park, was indicted for extortion to push tires to a trucking firm. U S planes strike North Vietnam in heavy raid

Up to 250 American combat planes attacked targets inside North Vietnam in a six hour operation near the DMZ. Fighter bombers conducted about 200 strikes against military sites while 50 support aircraft aided. No SAM fire was reported and all planes returned safely. The raid followed increased North Vietnamese anti aircraft and SAM attacks on reconnaissance flights.

Plan Petition Drive as Grafton Residents Reject Landfill Site

Grafton Township residents joined Carlisle in opposing a county landfill near Law Road at Rt 76 Mennell Road. About 30 people attended the Belden fire station meeting to pledge petition circulation by township residents and property owners. A follow up gathering at 8 p.m. next Monday will organize signatures and possibly hire counsel if needed.

The United States opens the 26th UN General Assembly urging the admission of Communist China while preserving Nationalist China’s UN seat. A Michigan couple died yesterday when the car they rode in lost control in heavy rain and struck a concrete bridge support on the Ohio Turnpike at West River Road.

Deadly crash claims Varhola couple on Ohio turnpike

Stephen Varhola, 62, and his wife Bernice, 47, of Crystal Falls Michigan, died in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike after rain drenched driving conditions. State patrol said Varhola lost control, the car struck a support, and both were pronounced dead at Elyria Memorial Hospital. They ran a Crystal Falls bakery. funeral arrangements were made with Plowe Funeral Home after Sudro-Curtis transferred the bodies.
