Lorain Waterfront Hotel Deal Faces Tax Hurdles

Landmark Hotel Corp. says new federal tax laws next year will cut profits on a $10.6 million Lorain lakefront hotel project. Developers and Lorain officials planned a Cleveland meeting to discuss financing, with about $1 million needed to buy the hotel site between Alabama and Arkansas avenues north of East Erie Avenue.

Vermilion crash leaves two seriously injured at crossing

A car train collision in Vermilion left two people in serious condition. Emergency crews responded to the scene as investigators began examining the crossing. In other news, EHS band will perform at the Browns Oilers rematch.

Firefighters avert walkout in Elyria Township dispute

About 10 Elyria Township Fire Department firefighters threatened to walk off over trustee interference. The walkout was averted after trustees agreed to a meeting to establish guidelines and resolve differences. The dispute traces to May when the department disassociated from the women’s auxiliary and amid long standing questions about Fire Chief Brack and trustee duties. Brack denies conflict of interest and an independent investigation cleared him.

Judge refuses shift of DeChant trial to other county

Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge Adrian Bedeski denied defense requests to move Gregory DeChant's November aggravated murder trial outside Lorain County. Prosecutor Gregory White said an impartial Elyria jury can be seated, with a move possible if Lorain jurors prove unable to be fair.
