South Africa’s white minority government will dismantle apartheid and extend political rights to blacks, with Parliament set to consider citizenship proposals and talks with black leaders. no timetable given as unrest spreads in three of four provinces.
In Columbia Township a family celebrates Christmas in September for Lance Corporal Hunt, a Marine headed to Japan for 18 months. His sister Mary Fox notes pride in him as siblings, nieces, and nephews parade him home to 2458 Henwill Rd. The visit blends Hunt's 19th birthday with a farewell party and a decorated tree.
Margaret Kilroy recalls her husband James J Kilroy who created the Kilroy Was Here graffito during World War I at a Massachusetts shipyard. The drawing became a famed symbol of wartime output and humor as his widow preserves the story and mark.
The NLRB vows a quick investigation into Ford Motor Co. charges against striking United Auto Workers Local 425 at Lorain assembly plant. Pickets have blocked a supplier gate despite no injuries. Ford calls the action a secondary strike and seeks NLRB action to halt picketing if violations are found. Local 425 began the walkout Sept. 8 over health and safety issues.
Two people in Lorain are under treatment with suspected AIDS though neither is confirmed. Health officials note only one confirmed case in Lorain County and cite reporting delays. Spokespeople for the state deny additional confirmed cases beyond the county total.
A Census Bureau report on 1984 robot shipments hints at a future robot census by 1987. It lists servo and non servo robots by SICs, notes salaries and imports, and marks welding soldering brazing and cutting as top jobs.
