Soviets Expel 25 Britons After London Retaliation

Moscow ordered 25 British diplomats journalists and businessmen to leave within three weeks in a tit-for-tat move after Britain expelled 25 Soviets on spy charges. Tass cited unnamed Britons being charged with activities incompatible with official status. British Ambassador Cartledge protested as 18 diplomats, 5 journalists and 2 businessmen were named among those expelled.

Botha blasts whites over talks with rebels in Soweto violence

President P W Botha denounced white business leaders who met with black guerrilla chiefs, saying no negotiations with outlawed groups would occur. In Soweto, about 20 black taxi drivers stabbed a man to death and shot another at a riot funeral as mourners clashed with cars, while in Mamelodi police used rubber bullets to break up crowds. A burned body was found in Kimberley.

Don Dahil of Elyria keeps his fire engine red 1966 Chevelle SS 396 with black vinyl interior, four on the floor, AM radio, and 19,000 miles as his lifelong auto love. He recalls it as the hottest thing on the street, notes its brief street runs before drag racing, and says he never sells it despite offers. Dahl now drives a 1981 Camaro but still spares the Chevelle for nice days, dreaming of future owning it in retirement.

Reagan backs three term presidency

President Reagan suggested changing the Constitution to allow more than two presidential terms. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said the idea arose at a Tampa meeting with state legislators, with Reagan noting it would not apply to him but that the public should decide leadership. Repealing the 22nd Amendment would need two-thirds support in Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states.

Susan Akin of Mississippi won the 1986 Miss America title in a pageant final night among 31 contestants. She earned a $30,000 scholarship with Sherry Thrift of South Carolina as runner up and Suelen Cochran of Ohio among top finalists.
