Detroit teachers face layoff threat amid contract stalemate
Detroit officials warned 2,000 of 11,000 striking teachers could be laid off to save about 50 million dollars if no contract concessions are agreed. Superintendent Arthur Jefferson said non union replacements would be hired if the strike continues. The Detroit Federation of Teachers disputed the tactic. The strike has idled about 200,000 students across 275 district schools.
