No Clearview quorum blocks 7-mill levy on ballot

Lack of a quorum at the Clearview Board of Education meeting prevented placing a proposed 7-mill operating levy on the November ballot. Two new members Kramer and Kucharek voted against Tuesday's resolution. both were absent last night. The levy would fund operating expenses and teacher raises, with 1 mill yielding about $18,029 for the district. The budget shown totals $954,000 at 22 mills, the county's lowest rate.

Plane Crash Kills New London Man In Rural Takeoff

Virgil E. Young of Rt 60 New London was killed when a light single engine plane crashed in a field near New London Airport around 9 am. Student pilot David Livingston of Perrysville was seriously injured and treated at Ashland Hospital. Bradley Young and Frank Hamilton pulled them from the wreck and awaited investigators from the Highway Patrol and FAA.

Boy dies after struck at Vermilion Valley plaza turnpike

An 11 year old boy, recently moved from Alaska to Lorain, was killed when a car struck him on the edge of the eastbound access road at the Vermilion Valley service plaza on the Ohio Turnpike. The driver, Russell Beach, 17, of Oberlin, attempted to avoid the group of about 35 youths returning from a Salvation Army hayride but struck the boy as he stood near the road. The death was ruled a skull fracture with the accident under investigation by the Ohio Highway Patrol. The boy’s family had been planning to enroll him in sixth grade at Harrison School. The hayride was part of Salvation Army youth activities in Lorain.
