Corn harvest woes hit Erie and Huron farmers

In Milan and surrounding areas hundreds of acres of sweet corn ripened early due to hot humid weather. Canneries struggled to handle the surge, leaving unharvested or unsellable corn while markets in Cleveland drew loads of corn. Some growers fed surplus to hogs as shipments stalled. Officials noted excellent kernels but poor saleability and said they had not been asked for assistance.

Lima curfew aims to curb disturbances at admiral king game

Lima officials coordinate with Lima Senior and Admiral King High schools as an 8 p.m. curfew for under 18s without guardians is imposed after last week's football disturbances. Police and county sheriffs set measures, seating limits and ticket allocations to keep the Lima stadium safe tonight.

LaGrange officer wins Distinguished Flying Cross for Vietnam service

LaGrange born Capt Willard Chuck Johnson received the Distinguished Flying Cross for more than 300 combat missions in Vietnam. The 27 year old Air Force pilot spent a 30 day leave with his parents at 310 West Main St. in LaGrange after a year based in Da Nang. Johnson flew the Bird Dog and Super Skymaster aircraft, directed air strikes against enemy positions, and aided defense of Army forces during the Tet Offensive. He also earned two Vietnamese Crosses of Gallantry and the Air Medal.

Elyria ok recertifies workable urban renewal program

U S OK grants city recertification for Elyria workable program paving the way for a Gold en Age Center project and federal funds for three urban renewal efforts. Mayor Jane Reichlin said the seven part program is a prerequisite for grant in aid and loans, with Rep Charles Mosher pressing HUD for status.

Shoes on a Heifer shines at Ohio State Fair display

Here it is fair farm fashion at Wellington with Bev Burge 18 and Nancy Saxe 17 of the Wellington Happy Farmers. They represented Lorain County at the Ohio State Fair earning an outstanding rating for their hoof care demonstration. Their entry titled Shoes on a Heifer showed proper cow hoof cleaning and earned alarm clocks as prizes.

Avon Mayor Nicholas T. Mitock received a grateful letter from 16 year old Peggy Wendorff after he helped save her asthmatic mother by performing mouth to mouth resuscitation and external heart massage during a night round with a police officer. An ambulance arrived with oxygen.

U S infantrymen outnumbered two to one blasted 860 Communist soldiers from a Cambodian border outpost and forced a rout toward sanctuaries. There were no U S fatalities with 12 wounded as jet fighters strafed fleeing Reds and South Vietnamese militia counted 83 Communist dead. New fighting flared near Tay Ninh City as Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops pressed in.

Lerner Pushes Levy Passage as Community Stake

Loram Health Department stops daily pollen counts as of today with a spokesman saying the count is zero. Elyria chemist Ernest Bartha reports a 14 reading and notes late season weather makes pollen activity unlikely. Hay fever expert credits 1968 as a mild year with few symptoms overall.
