Bodies Of Five Men From Train Wreckage
In Monroe Louisiana on September 14 rescuers recovered the bodies of five unidentified men from an Illinois Central freight wreck near West Monroe. Eleven others were hospitalized with injuries, including Pete Riggo of Calhon aged 20 who lost a leg after a box car overturned and had to be amputated to free him. The train derailed after leaving Shreveport, with fifteen freight cars and oil tanks destroyed by fire. The engineer and fireman escaped unharmed. All the injured were transient riders on the freight train.
