Cold cure breakthrough maps virus structure for drug design
Researchers led by Purdue University Professor Michael Rossmann mapped the three dimensional makeup of HRV-14, the cold virus, using Purdue's supercomputer and Cornell’s synchrotron. The detailed 20 sided virus structure reveals vulnerable points for future drugs and potential vaccines, signaling progress toward antiviral therapies and possibly affecting AIDS and leukemia research.

ICE probes comet tail in bold solar wind study
Scientists from TRW and NASA report the ICE satellite passed through the 14 000 mile wide tail of comet Giacobini Zinner 44 trillion miles away. It found unusually little dust but intense electrical activity and a shock wave from the sun's wind. Flight plans include two more passes near Halley's comet in 1986.
