Avon investigators pursue motive in the DeChant family killings. Leonard and Arlene DeChant were killed, son Greg DeChant stabbed and hospitalized under guard, later released to attend therapy. Prosecutor and Avon detectives say a case is nearing completion with potential arrests anticipated within days.
Lorain Street Superintendent Richard Weldon was found guilty of two theft in office counts by an eight woman four man jury after a day and a half of testimony in Lorain County Common Pleas Court. He faces possible prison time and fines, with sentencing set in 4 to 6 weeks pending a pre sentence report.
Helen Johnson, 24, of Lorain, pleaded guilty to three felony counts of child endangering in the Feb fire that killed her three young children. She entered the pleas in Lorain County Common Pleas Court and faces 4 to 6 weeks before sentencing, with possible six year terms per count.
Elyria Lorain County commissioners told department heads there will be no new hirings and no raises for county employees this year. They expect tax funds to arrive in Sept Dec and discuss sewer line bids for Lorain County Regional Airport. Calls to hire more correctional officers and plan for 1986 tax funds are noted. No layoffs are projected, though the year will be tough.
El Salvador President Jose Napoleon Duarte reports his eldest daughter Ines Duarte Duran, 35, was abducted Tuesday as she arrived at a university in San Salvador. Her driver was killed and a bodyguard wounded before she was taken in a van. No ransom or messages have been received.
Pete Rose went 0 for 4 as he chased Ty Cobb's all time hit mark in a dramatic late effort. He ripped a liner to left in the eighth that was snagged by a fielder and will try again tonight to add one more hit. AP report from D-5.

The United Way of Greater Lorain County launched an eight week drive with a 2.8 million dollar goal, down from last year’s 3 million target but aimed at funding 36 agencies. The kickoff at DeLuca’s Place in the Park outlined divisional targets and urged community support to restore funding to needed services.
