A severe blast leveled a building at Eastman Kodak Co plant in Rochester. Three dead and 29 injured as windows shattered and ambulances rushed to the site. The blast, heard for miles, damaged surrounding structures and debris filled the area.
Seattle journal notes Sept 11 17 reports two young fliers Moyle and Allen vanished in the North Pacific after departing Sabishiro Beach Japan aboard their monoplane Pity of Tarema. Search efforts by three nations have yet to locate them or their craft with slim chance of survival if they landed on a remote island or coast.
A basement time bomb exploded during a four family house blaze in Cleveland Ohio on September 11. Firemen fought the fire when bricks and debris struck several rescuers injuring Edward Roche who was hospitalized. The blast toppled the structure and blew out windows across about a dozen nearby homes with additional fires starting in adjacent buildings.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions and continued warm temperatures. Tonight and Saturday should stay warm and clear with low temperatures around the mid 30s to mid 40s in listed locales and highs near 100. Weather remains favorable for a warm, pleasant weekend ahead.
Mid west and eastern states baked under a heat wave with temperatures near September records. Milwaukee reported heat deaths while Eau Claire Wisconsin set a new September high of 101 degrees. Chicago tied a 94 degree mark, matching a 1897 record as New York stayed hot with four deaths.
London reports Chancellor Philip Snowden unveiling a budget aimed at eliminating a 833.49 million deficit. Income tax rises for workers, beer and gasoline increases, a new entertainment tax, higher taxes on tobacco and unearned income, and broad wage cuts for civil servants and defense. Snowden projects 200 million in new taxes this year and 400 million next year.
Elyria city hall reports fruit donations for distribution to needy families. Mayor James A. Hewitt announced 23 bushels of peaches received and 30 to 40 bushels of apples promised, plus more peaches today. Jars for canning arrive but not enough to meet demand. He urged extra jars from canners, and noted a farm between Brownhelm and Amerat has peaches with orders via the mayor’s office.
A large turnout at Elyria Post 1079 Woodman Hall heard delegate Thomas Mihatis report on the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Encampment in Kansas City. He noted the organization grew with 354 new posts 61 169 members and six new departments in a single year led by Commander-in-Chief Paul C. Walman.
Lorain County commissioners trimmed the general fund by 41 690 reducing the tentative 1932 budget from 74 845 to 743 145 still about 74 000 above expected revenues. Major cuts include 20 000 from the tuberculosis asylum, 5 900 mothers pension, 5 000 elections, and 3 900 court house and jail.
Geneva reports negotiations to seek a worldwide armament cessation. A Danish proposed resolution to the League of Nations council would seek a holiday from armament building through the end of the 1932 world disarmament conference. Italian Foreign Minister Dino Grandt presented the idea.
In Youngstown on September 11, special judges in common pleas court publicly reprimanded Judges Jenkins and Lyons at a hearing seeking their disbarment. Neither was disbarred. The court cleared Attorney Andrew M. Henderson, the third defendant. The court barred Judge Lyons from cases involving Ohio Edison Company or Henderson while obligations to either remain.
Singer Manufacturing Co declared an extra dividend of 1 dollar and the regular quarterly of 250 dollars. Major oil companies in Detroit raised gasoline prices across trades. Gulf Oil Corp declared the regular quarterly dividend of 37.5 cents. National Electric Power Co subsidiaries in New York reported August output 23 percent above August 1930. Formica Insulation Co of Cincinnati declared the regular quarterly dividend of 50 cents. Midland Utilities Co of Chicago declared the regular quarterly dividends on all stocks. Neon Electrical Products Corp Ltd of Los Angeles declared the regular charterly dividend on common and preferred stocks.
County commissioners and a group of Lorain residents attended a Public Utilities Commission hearing in Columbus on the Lake road grade crossing. Railroads opposed the bridge proposal while two options priced at 231000 and 206000 were considered. the county would cover about a quarter of the cost.
John Vinson aged 28 of 117 Oberlin road was found in Elyria Memorial Hospital with five knife wounds after a quarrel in an Oberlin road pool room last night. Police searched the pool room for the assailant but could not locate him. Vinson's condition was listed as fair.
The Farm Board approved the Grain Stabilization Corporation selling 7.5 million bushels of wheat to the Deutsche Getreide Handelsgesellschaft, a semi government German agency.
Judge H C Wilcox overruled the motion for a new trial in the condemnation case against Sam Beal over Telegraph road overhead bridge relocation. Judgment granted Beal $1000 for his property and $250 damages. similar verdicts also given in Elmer Beal’s case. Beals protested the awarded amounts in state highway department proceedings.
Le Bourget France Sept 11 two French crews Lebri and Duret in Hyphen II and Mesmin in a third plane departed toward Tokio aiming to reclaim the world straight line record for France. Codos Ribda followed in the Question Walk. route expected via Brussels Moscow and across Siberia with a $40000 prize offered by the air ministry.
Dr. W. A Axby of Harrison Ohio, former Columbus Inv ision Kiwanis president, spoke at the Hotel Newell lunch on the value of Kiwanis for personal and global citizenship. He outlined club activities aiding member development and society, joining 200 miles traveled from Harrison with Dr. C. F Bauer. Visitors included J W Aldrich tax commissioner and C L Wells of Vermont. Treasure Chest events move Elyria to Barberton Sept 15 with plans for a large delegation. next week Clarence J Brown Secretary of State will speak.
The Lorain county tuberculosis sanatorium near Amherst will accept bids for furnishing refrigerators. The county building commission will open bids at a court house meeting this afternoon, as announced today.
Belize British Honduras suffers severe hurricane and tidal wave damage with hundreds of casualties feared. Priests reported killed. U S Consul Taggart lightly injured. Pan American Airways relays disaster details to Washington. Hoover orders navy and Red Cross aid. Swan mine sweeper to Trejillo Honduras to restore comms.
A tropical hurricane of 100 mph hit Porto Rico causing heavy destruction in San Juan. Lines were knocked out and debris lined streets as communication across the island was disrupted. Early estimates of crop losses were not available. In Belize, officials reported a hurricane with about 200 deaths and aid flights with medical supplies to the area.
The hurricane that hit Porto Rico last night is moving toward Haiti and the Dominican Republic with continued extreme force. Interior damage in Porto Rico remains unknown as weather officials assess the scene. Jem Smith a famed bare knuckle fighter died in London at age 65 with a 1987 disputed bout against Jake Kura noted.
