Polk birthplace museum preserves presidential stamp era
In Columbia Tennessee the Polk childhood home remains a museum highlighting James K Polk’s presidency and the first U S postage stamps. Visitors see a 1995 commemorative stamp and learn of Polk’s expansionist policies, Texas annexation and the Mexican American War lasting 1846 to 1848. The exhibit also covers Sarah Polk, slave ownership, and Polk’s death in Nashville in 1849.
