Sandra Day O'Connor testified on abortion past and present as Senate scrutiny of her nomination to be the first woman on the Supreme Court continued. She said she would not have an abortion but would not condemn others and refused to detail how she would vote on cases that may come before the court.
Elyrian Margaret Kahliff, acting vice chairman of the Export Import Bank board, says she may retire from government service after the Carter to Reagan transition. Only chairman William Draper has been appointed to the five-member board so far, she states, and she will serve until her replacement is named.
Mrs Kahliff, the sole Republican appointee on the Ex-Im Bank board, remarks on staying in her role beyond a term, noting a history of acting chair duties. She cites 40 months of acting leadership before confirmation and says she has no plans to leave, amid budget cuts hampering bank operations and a long career in vending and molding prior to public service.
Jacobozzi, 51, the final defense witness in a Lorain housing program case, shouted defiance at special prosecutor MacGillivray after being accused of defrauding the VA. He denied the charges as court prepared closing arguments and a judge planned ruling after today’s session.
The FBI Uniform Crime Report shows 13 million serious crimes in 1980, a level 55 percent higher than a decade earlier. Murder victims occurred about every 23 minutes, with robberies at about one per minute, and overall arrest rates remained low across most categories.
Negotiations between Elyria and city police unions wrap up with a two year contract for the Elyria Police Patrolmen's Association and a tentative accord for the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 40. Wages rise about 15.7 percent over two years, with back pay to June 1980 for EPPA and to Jan 1 1982 for FOP. Contract language remains to be written, with council expected to act September 21 on the FOP, and November 2 extension for the old FOP contract. The EPPA pact includes a new holiday and overtime parity with firefighters, while the FOP adds acting pay and extra duties. Saturday is Sarah L. Tattersall Day in Elyria.
