A University of Pennsylvania political scientist says extending the vote to 18 creates an independent active but nonpartisan youth bloc. He notes higher education and awareness among 18 to 20 year olds blur old apathy and could erode party identification.
President Nixon meets with top labor leaders including Leonard Woodcock and I W Abel to study post freeze measures. Officials say retroactive pay for wage hikes frozen or delayed is a key demand as unions seek ongoing input on economic policy beyond the August 15 wage price freeze.
Trustees approve Stanley J. Trupo 35 of Berea as Lorain County Community College development director with one dissenting vote over an 18500 first year salary. He leaves Cleveland Museum of Natural History to take the post and will manage federal state and local funding relations.

About 30 hostages remain in Cellblock D as negotiations potential, while 500 inmates still in two blocks earlier, and clashes injure guards amid the blaze. Authorities report five buildings burned and demands include wage and reform calls.
Lorain County confirms southern corn leaf blight on three western farms after Ohio State University Plant Disease Clinic verification. Agricultural Agent Arthur Blackwell warns the fungus affects field corn, not sweet corn, with economic impact and harvest uncertainty. Farmers urged to inspect tips, ensile promptly, and report suspected diseased corn to the Extension Office.

At a joint meeting of three Elyria committees the West River Parkway project stalled amid heated discussion. A revised spending plan for $977000 in state Issue 1 funds was presented by Peter Van Wormer to approve an ordinance requesting funds. The proposal shifts to a bridge at Second Street with a Lorain Boulevard fork to ease the Lorain Boulevard Lake Avenue Lodi Street bottleneck, while county and state plans previously called for bridges at Second and Third Streets.
