Elyria Park Origin and Landmark Community Pride

Hemen Ely, founder of Elyria, conceived the central city park in 1816 with civil engineer Ahaz Merchant. Deeded in 1822 to Edmund West for public use, the square grew from a wooden fence and cricket games to a refined park with trees, walks, flower beds, a fountain, memorials, and a courthouse overlook. It remains a symbol of civic pride, though a monument to the founder is still missing.
