Desperate convicts escape from Mississippi prison farm
Six inmates escaped the state prison farm at Parchman Mississippi today. Among them was Roney Eaton a life term for murder in the death of U S Deputy Marshal Clyde Rivers. They hijacked a car to flee and officers statewide searched for the fugitives. Other escapees named were O B Winters J P Conner Armour Andrews Clifford Smith and Tom Dear. The breakout occurred around 2 am.

State Highway Survey Details Bridges to Replace
Columbus, Sept 8. A survey by J B Burkey, chief bridge engineer, estimates replacing weak, one way and faulty bridges on the 12 660 mile highway system would cost about 20 million dollars after surveying 6 847 bridges. Of those, 3 166 should be replaced. details show 1 300+ areas weak or narrow, 77 54 miles of bridges, 1 027 steel beams and 24 62 miles to be replaced. The system includes 1 705 bridges under 18 feet wide, 3 647 between 18 and 27 feet, and 1 495 over 27 feet. Capacity notes: 13 bridges under seven tons, 768 between seven and 12 tons, 287 under 12 ton limits, and 4 979 over 15 tons. Thirty three bridges lack 12 foot vertical clearance. Continued on Page 2.
