First human Jarvik-7 bridge to transplant in Tucson
In Tucson on Friday night Michael Drummond, a heart patient, received a donor heart after the Jarvik-7 artificial heart kept him alive for nine days. Surgeons led by Dr. Jack Copeland completed the four hour and 45 minute operation, with Drummond's survival chances estimated at 75 to 80 percent for one year and 50 percent for five years. The donor heart from Tarro Griffin arrived by helicopter within minutes of surgery.
