New York Stocks Edge Lower After Labor Day Open

Investors return from the Labor Day break to selling as high interest rates weigh on markets. The Dow fell 3.33 to 858.35 in opening trading amid more decliners than gainers, with Gulf Oil 4 down to 35.44, Sony 4 down to 17.? and Texaco 4 down to 35. Citicorp held at 22.42 as Citibank launches a rate risk protection program. The Dow industrial average dropped 5.33 to 861.68, week losses totaling 30.54.
