Pope accepts resignation of Cardinal Cushing
In Vatican City Pope Paul VI accepted the resignation of Richard Cardinal Cushing archbishop of Boston for reasons of age and health. Humberto S Medeiras bishop of Brownsville Texas since 1966 was named to replace him. Cushing indicated he knew of the resignation and noted his plans to retire around 75 and later work in South America but said he is too ill to travel. He has suffered asthma bronchial ailments emphysema and a resistant infection recently hospitalised for several days.

Lorain executive dies in Ohio River boat crash
Loren Hageman, 28, executive at Lorain Telephone Co and Lorain Electric, was killed when his boat Lead Soldier was struck during the first downriver turn in a national power boating championship on the Ohio River. He died of head injuries at Mercy Hospital Portsmouth after the crash.
