New Movement To Oppose Drive For Appointive Judges

A new effort in Ohio challenges a proposed constitutional amendment to create an appointive judiciary for the Supreme and Appellate Courts. The Ohio League to Preserve Democracy and the elected judiciary has formed in Cleveland with state wide aims and petitions in Columbus to gain sufficient signatures for November ballot placement. The Ohio Federation of Labor urged members to oppose, calling it a sinister move to strip voters of selection rights. Leaders include Sylvester V. McMahon and Joseph L Stern, with trustees from labor and legal groups and civic figures. A related note reports a street collision on Broad Street injuring Warren Ingram of Akron and Vincent Valentine of Cleveland, damaging Ingram’s gas tank.
