Sadat cracks down after sectarian clashes in Egypt
President Anwar Sadat announced sweeping measures to confront a serious threat to national unity in Egypt. He dismissed Shenouda as Coptic pope, disbanded religious societies, banned church and mosque political use, seized some organizational property, and transferred professors and media staff. About 1,500 people were arrested with 250 to face criminal charges, while the government prepared a national referendum on the measures and draft laws.

Iran prosecutor dies in Tehran militant attack
Iran's revolutionary prosecutor Ayatollah Ali Qaddousi died from injuries after an incendiary device hit the military command complex in northeastern Tehran. At least two others were hurt in the blast and fire. Police chief Col Houshang Wahid Dasigerdi also died, with reports of arrests tied to the incident. The wave of assassinations has killed over 80 since June 22, with Mujahideen Khalq blamed by authorities for many attacks.
