Unique Swiss army merit system noted in history
John Hix describes the Swiss army where recruits start as privates and promotions to officer ranks come by merit. Switzerland’s total armed forces are about 500,000 with no peace-time generals. The piece also recalls Rhode Island slavery history in Newport, noting 426 enslaved people in 1706 among 7,181 residents and rum trade as a trade route to Africa. Tomorrow: A Life-saving Flag.
