An official communique reports preliminary maneuvering by French and German troops along a six mile belt near the frontier. No real fighting and no artillery fire had been recorded through 3 45 p m Paris time as observers note troops moving into advance positions and maintaining observation.
Warsaw reports indicate the Polish government plans to relocate its headquarters from the capital as German forces push from East Prussia toward Warsaw. The city endures heavy bombardment with fires from incendiaries, while civilians evacuate in increasing numbers and allied diplomats depart.
Elyria Township schools opened for 1939 40 with grade reorganization moving first four grades to Lake Avenue and upper grades to Markley School. About six families kept children home amid accusations the board railroaded the action, approved 4 to 1 with L H Keller dissent.
Fair and cool tonight in Ohio with temperatures rising to fair and warmer conditions Wednesday. A broad disturbance spans from the St. Lawrence Valley to the Atlantic coast and extends into the Rocky Mountain region and Gulf States. Showers reported across the Lower Lake region, Middle Atlantic, East Gulf, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and other areas.
Berlin reports indicate major German victories in Poland with claims of Polish forces collapsing and key cities falling. It also notes twelve British planes shot down during raids on Wilhelmshaven and Cuxhaven, and the capture of Gradenz, Kattowice, Nowychorzow, Mlawa, and hand-to-hand fighting near Warsaw as Hitler leads from the field.
New York September 3 The liner President Roosevelt anchored with 538 passengers aboard. Most passengers noted the crowded ship condition and discomfort of the crossing as it arrived.
Grand jurors in Lorain today consider about a score of criminal cases from the summer, led by the Kipton Bank holdup charge against Stanley Korowski, 25, of Lorain. He was arrested July 11 after being found in a field near a friend’s home and later admitted participation in the Kipton and Berea bank robberies. He and two accomplices who remain fugitives reportedly took $900. Assistant Prosecutor Wickens said the session may end today as the April term’s final session proceeds with one juror replacement, Gladys Jenkins replacing Pearl Reynolds.
Service Director I D Faxon says crews started removing bricks in the center lane of Middle Avenue between Eighth and Ninth streets as part of a WPA repaving project from Fourth to Ninth streets. Traffic on the eastern side will not be closed while bricks are removed and relaid.
Members of the Elyria Real Estate Board will meet at noon Wednesday at the Elks' Restaurant. President J W. Smith urged all members to attend. The board has received a state booklet on real estate license laws for brokers and salesmen, with another booklet to be distributed by W O Zaiser.
In Montevideo on September 5, reports say the German freighter Olinda was seized by British sailors after the crew learned Germany and Britain were at war. Officer Mens Menchuhdt of the Ovide details the events to United Press.
Anti German rioting erupts in Johannesburg as crowds demonstrating loyalty to Britain torch two German trucks and a German car. Windows of a German shipping line are smashed while attempts to burn a German seed merchant’s premises fail. Police use tear gas but rioting continues.
Reports from London state the German steamer Carl Fritzen, of Emden, 6594 tons, has been sunk off Brazil by the British cruiser Ajax, in addition to the Olinda. The Carl Fritzen crew is reported safe. sinking locality not specified.
A United Press survey of British ports shows about 1,000 of the 1,400 passengers on the liner Athenta accounted for. The report indicates the majority of the 311 Americans aboard were saved.
The British steamboat Bosnia of 2,400 tons was sunk by an enemy action. All hands were rescued by the Norwegian tanker Eidanger except fireman Woods, who is reported dead. The Bosnia belonged to Cunard White Star Line and operated as a cargo liner.
Fifth German air raid targeted a Red Cross train near Szudlowiex in Poland at 1 a.m. local time, partially destroying the carriages, as reported by the Polish telegraph agency.
Berlin dispatch reports German aircraft in combat between Warsaw and Lodz today shot down 11 Polish planes. It was also announced that a third Polish submarine was sunk in Danzig Bay, marking another setback for Poland.
Toryo dispatch reports that the Japanese Foreign Office formally notified the American, British, French, or German and Tahan envoys that Japan will stay neutral in the European war.
Berlin dispatch reports Natowice one of Poland s major cities and key industrial centers has been captured by German forces. Official confirmation came today as troops secured the area amid ongoing operations in Poland.
London report states Parliament completed passage of a bill requiring all residents in Great Britain to register for national service. The measure mandates universal registration, with details to be set by government implementation.
In Danzig authorities announced that all Polish property, both state and private, has been confiscated and is now under the supervision of a state commissioner.
Bratislava reported Premier Dr Josef Tiso stated Slovakia is allied with Germany, confirming the wartime political alignment. The Sept 5 briefing underscored the formal ties between Slovakia and Germany during the period.

Ohioans named include George Cottle Laura Cottle Bronson Price Charles W Cotterman Alma Bloom Ira Vincent Jessie H Sutherland Mrs Mary E Kelly and daughter Florence Mrs Mark G Feder. Price teaches psychology at Ohio State University and Cotterman works in the zoology and entomology department there. They were returning from a Genetics Congress in Edinburgh Scotland.
Rome reports Italy's neutrality remains firm as shipping is set to resume yet Italian press cautions the nation could enter the conflict at any moment. Mussolini's last-ditch efforts to avert war appear ended, with details of talks in Berlin Paris and London showing Britain and France open to revising the Versailles settlement.
Polish troops claim they raided a German armored car unit northeast of Czestochowa as 20 German divisions press in Silesia. Germany reports 15,000 Polish prisoners after taking Kattowice and advancing toward Krakow and Lodz. In the North Polish front the corridor to the Baltic appears severed while Gdynia and Danzig area bombardments continue. Further south, East Prussia drive stalls 50 miles north of Warsaw with heavy fighting near Przasnysz.
Paris dispatches for today report serious disorders in Germany affecting Cologne Dusseldorf and Essen regions. The updates were released by Zurich for the French radio agency and detail unrest across several western German cities.
Washington September 5 the United States sharply cut travel to and from Europe Secretary of State Cordell Hull ordered all passports held by Americans for European travel cancelled and new passport issuance strictly controlled Outstanding passports must be revalidated by the State Department before travel to or from Europe is allowed.
At Treland Galway on Sept 5 three bend eight survivors of the British liner Athenda, including Americans, land at noon exhausted and wrapped in dressing gowns and red blankets. Survivors show signs of fatigue and shock. many are soot-stained and chilly as they disembark under gray skies.
