The city council plans to finalize the 1933 budget at tonight’s meeting after a prior tentative approval and a public hearing. The panel may also vote on the white way lighting assessment ordinance as the lighting committee tests dimming or turning out half the streetlights to cut costs.
Sept 6 Cleveland news reports Maurice Maschke Republican leader and five co-defendants in an embezzlement indictment totaling 177000 from the county treasury have had trials postponed to Sept 15. Alex Bernstein, former chief deputy county treasurer cited as principal, seeks counsel for himself and son Albert as finances run short. A new grand jury will reopen the half million dollar treasury shortage probe. eight persons indicted though several counsel changes occurred. Defendants present include Charles Bernstein Henry A Becker man H H Felsman Benny Finkle Luther Day and Samuel J Kornhauser with Bernstein aiders and abettors.
Laverne Schmidt, 13, suffered a fractured right arm after tripping while running to a crash scene near Elyria. Three Cleveland residents were hurt when their car collided with a machine driven by C. Spalding of Elyria on Ford road hill two miles north of Elyria. Mrs. Earl A. Shirk, 28, fractured ribs and went into shock. William Walker, 12, had facial and head lacerations. Willard Blace, 12, minor injuries. All were taken to Memorial Hospital. David Paton, 24, had minor injuries after his motorcycle collided with Mrs. Frank Kritzel’s car on West Street. Paton treated at Memorial.
Ohio forecast calls for fair weather tonight with cooler temperatures and a light breeze. Expect a calm, dry period with no significant precipitation across the region tonight. Local advisories remain minimal as temperatures dip after sunset.
Grain prices rose sharply on the Chicago Board of Trade with May wheat up 2 1/8 cents and other months higher. Corn gained 7/8 to 1 1/4 cents while rye advanced, aided by the Federal Farm Board report of 3,000,000 bushels of cash wheat and strength in Liverpool and other markets. Opening quotes showed September wheat up 1 3/4 cents, December up 2, and May up 2 1/8 cents.
Franklin Fort of the Home Loan Bank board announced a plan to create voluntary regional building and loan clearing houses to extend loans and forestall mortgage foreclosures in markets hit by bank failures and tight money. Four associations are set in Virginia, West Virginia, New Jersey. Fort said the idea received strong support from mortgage bankers and tied to a proposed 60 day nation wide foreclosure moratorium.
Jimmy Doolittle roared to victory in the Thompson Trophy race near Cleveland with an average speed of 252.686 mph on a 100 mile course. He set a near record pace in the Gee Bee wasp powered aircraft, finishing 16.447 mph ahead of last year’s winner and earning 4500 dollars. Mae Haizlip of St Louis also set a women’s land speed record at 255.513 mph.
Columbus O Sept 6 Governor George White cancels all out of town engagements and focuses on calling and shaping the third special session this year. He will confer with experts and cabinet on legislation to cut state expenses, restructure taxes, and enable local housing projects with federal bank support. The session is expected in the last 10 days of September.
Unprecedented rains swelled the Rio Grande to a tawny flood in the lower valley. Eight people are known dead over three days as property damage nears 5 million dollars and lowlands are inundated. Levees and floodways are under frantic guard while tributaries fall back. In Texas, the Trinity river is also at flood stage after heavy rains. Rail lines are washed out in places and residents from Fort Worth to Dallas are urged to evacuate.
Junior Weed, 31-2, of Rocky River, sustained head injuries yesterday about 5 45 P M when he fell from a swing at Cascade Park. Doctors said injuries were not considered serious and police reported the incident.
President Hoover spent Labor Day in Virginia and returned to the White House today. The trip marked a brief respite from national duties as he resumed official responsibilities upon arrival in Washington.
Lorain County's eighty sixth annual fair neared close as crowds neared 10 000 at an event with free admission last night and 7500 to 8000 during the day. Exhibits livestock crops arts and crafts filled the midway and tents while merchants hall featured radios refrigerators and furniture. Health department posters urged better health and the baby contest noted as a missed feature.
Red Cross displays at the Lorain County Fair highlight its first aid station and posters showing 9 995 bags of government flour distributed locally with 8 000 more on the way. Posters note relief spending in 1931 and large shipments of fruit vegetables and canned goods, plus a county roll call October 20 to 30. The Lorain and Elyria chapters cover county townships. exhibit prepared under Mrs O W Greene who will chair the upcoming drive.
Raymond Russell, 23, was fined $10 and costs and sentenced to 10 days in the county jail for stealing gasoline from a state highway tractor on Cleveland Road about 4 a m today. He was caught by Leon Ryan, watchman. A man and his wife and child accompanying Russell were released after investigation. deputies said the group had only $2 between them.
Public school bells rang to start the new term as Lorain County districts reopen for the 1932 35 year. Elyria and most county schools begin with changes from Edison and Jefferson reorganization, while concerns over a potential parental strike hover. Enrollment figures pending, several buildings delayed, and salaries reduced up to 15 percent as cost cuts reshape staffing.
Bulletin from Tokyo reports four military aviators killed when two combat planes collided during naval maneuvers at Kitan Strait. Four other planes reportedly crashed during the aerial maneuvers.

Des Moines news bulletin reports the State Bureau of Investigation will probe last week’s farm strike violence at Cherokee, Iowa, where 14 men were shot. James E. Risden, head of the bureau, said a top agent will be sent to lead the inquiry.
Coast guards rescued eight people including Floyd Chilton and Lloyd Chilton of Rocky River and his wife from a disabled cabin cruiser a mile off the Rock River mouth after a four hour drift. Acting Captain E S Holdren led the rescue, towing the craft to Cleveland. Two others, William Hughes and three women, were saved from a 25 foot speedboat five miles out in Lake Erie.
Florence Hurley wife of Edward N Hurley former Shipping Board chairman was fatally injured when a train hit the automobile she rode in with her daughter and son in law at a Hillside crossing Chicago Sept 6.
More than eight hundred students begin the 1932 33 term in local parochial schools. St Mary's leads enrollment with about 400, including 455 in first grade. St Agnes reports about 200 in first day, Holy Cross about 179, and St John's Lutheran 51. All eight grades offered.
Miami reports Florida mobilizes to move about 4000 residents living along the hurricane path to safety within four hours. Governor Doyle E Carlton orders two special trains to evacuate towns on the east shore of Lake Okeechobee and ensures free transport back after the storm. Bahamas monitors show storm passing north of Nassau as mainland residents brace for impact.
Bolivia's Chamber of Deputies received a formal motion calling for a declaration of war against Paraguay. Deputy Felipe Molina presented the measure, which was referred to the chamber committee handling Gran Chaco dispute amid near open conflict and stalled arbitration prospects.
