South Amherst weighs solo talks with Columbia Gas over rate hike
South Amherst plans to negotiate its natural gas rates with Columbia Gas of Ohio rather than join regional agreements. City officials project 1985 rates up 1.3 percent, with 1986 to 1988 increases of 2.6 2.9 and 2.8 percent respectively. An $82 monthly bill would rise 97 cents in 1985 and $2 in 1986, totaling about $8 more monthly over four years. Mayor Kenneth Jones cites longer terms and more village control as benefits of bargaining alone. The contract expires year end and a council vote is slated for Oct. 24. If terms fail, the village joins the regional group.
