Hurricane Irma Dips to Category 2 Then Reasserts Strength
Irma weakened to a Category 2 with 110 mph winds but forecasters say it will regain strength over the next two days. The hurricane, about 1,220 miles from the Leeward Islands, moves west at 15 mph and is expected to turn west-southwest toward the Lesser Antilles next week. Forecast models show a 200-mile spread by day five, with the storm remaining powerful as it nears the Caribbean. A ship reported winds of 45 mph near Irma, with tropical storm force winds out to 60 miles. It is too early to assess potential impacts on the U.S. mainland.
