Scott Noll, a 1994 Midview graduate, recalls the August 28 1994 flood in Katy Texas after Hurricane Harvey. He had one hour to choose what to save moving furniture and photos to higher ground. He grabbed his laptop clothes birth certificates and essential documents as the flood approached.
Sherry Webb-Fisher, class of 1984, from League City Texas, used her home to cook hot meals for 800 Coast Guard members stationed at Ellington Field. She says Harvey left many homes flooded as airboat rescues continued nearby.
Martel Carruthers, 17, from Seabrook, was stranded for three days as Hurricane Harvey caused flash floods in the Houston area. His mother Peggy Carruthers recalled receiving distress reports while the streets turned to rivers and help finally arrived after Aug. 26.
After Charlottesville protests Sen. John McCain condemned hatred on Twitter. Pro-Russian bots amplified an online campaign attacking McCain with links to blogs and the ExplainMcCain hashtag, signaling intensified cyber meddling ahead of the 2018 elections with Republicans defending both chambers.
County and city offices will be closed for Labor Day and Elyria trash collection delayed by one day. Mail service will be affected as staff report closures.
Elyria born 15 year old Sally Williams Minnich wrote the song Elyria which became the city’s namesake. The Cleveland Pops Orchestra performed the piece in Ely Square during the bicentennial Labor Day Weekend after Williams Minnich, now in State College Pennsylvania, was invited by former teacher Ann Gilbert who plays bass with the orchestra.
