York abatement deal eyed by Elyria City Council

Elyria awaits a 10 year tax abatement with York International to forgive up to 2 million in corporate taxes and create up to 500 jobs over the life of the agreement. The package includes 95 percent abatement on tangible property and inventory taxes for two years, tapering to 70 percent later, costing schools about 140000 annually in forgone taxes while netting 3400 in new tax dollars yearly and about 117000 in income tax from added 11 million in payroll. York seeks 2 to 3 million state aid for the Madisonville plant relocation, with the state offering 500000 to 600000. The council also plans two resolutions to gain resident support for a higher city income tax for police funding.

Woman killed in crash linked to knife in skull case

In Wooster Ohio a state trooper, Jimmy Jones, 30, faces murder charges after his wife, Karen Jones, 33, died when their car struck a power pole on Ohio 83. Investigators say a knife fragment was found in Karen Jones skull and a fight in the car preceded the crash. Authorities are probing whether the death occurred before the crash and if the incident was staged. The Wooster post and Wayne County Sheriff are handling the inquiry.

Vandals strike in Elyria hit 40 mailboxes and posts

Police report a overnight vandalism spree in Elyria damaged close to 40 mailboxes and posts across five streets. Randall Road suffered 11 damaged mailboxes while Pasadena Avenue and Berkshire Road each had nine damaged or destroyed.

Russians Shop At Midway Mall During Labors Day Visit

Nine MiG 29 aviators and crew touring Midway Mall on Labor Day saw free market choices in action. The group, here for Burke Lakefront air show duties aboard an Ilyushin 76, browsed shoes and cameras, ate pizza, and noted the high prices. They bought three motorized cameras at Woolworth with help from escorts, while one admitted the price of a $50 camera was steep.

Six pulled from Lake Erie after boat sinks

Two Lorain families were saved from Lake Erie after their 17 foot power boat sank north of Rocky River while returning from the Cleveland National Air Show. Westlake operator Terry G Tracy and his four passengers pulled the six boaters from the water using a throw ring and delivered them to the Cleveland Yacht Club for paramedic check.

Baby boy found in field. mother sought by police

A baby boy found in a farm field near Hughes and Quarry Roads remains in good condition at Oberlin’s Allen Memorial Hospital. Lorain County investigators, led by Sheriff Tomasheski, say tips are being checked but no concrete information about the mother has emerged. The infant, wrapped in sweatshirts and towels, was found with the umbilical cord cut and is under emergency custody of Lorain County Children’s Services for foster care.
