Speed Flier Killed In Bendix Trophy Open At Cleveland

The opening day of the National Air Races at Cleveland's Municipal Airport turned tragic when Lee Miles, 37, of Fort Worth, was killed in a qualifying crash of his tiny racer. Witnesses said the plane reached about 270 mph before shedding its wings and plunging into woods. Miles, a prominent racing pilot since 1933 and 1934 American champion, had also given flying lessons, counting Ann Harding among his pupils. Another fatality occurred a week earlier in Presidio, Texas, involving Mrs Genevieve Savage. The event's program included mass flights, stunt flying, parachute jumps, and the Amelia Earhart Memorial race for women.

Showers tonight and perhaps Saturday morning with cooler conditions anticipated Saturday in central and north areas. A weather disturbance centers over the Lake Tegiot with a 29.64 inch low pressure at Port Arthur and White River. Rain occurred in Ohio, the South Atlantic States, the Lower Mississippi Valley, Eastern Texas, the Southern Rocky Mountain region and along the Great Lakes' northern edge. Temperatures yesterday were in the 0s in the Ohio Valley and west toward the rockies.

Halpin Enters Mayor Race as Independent Candidate

John B. Halpin of 12% Glendale court files as an independent for mayor. A former Republican councilman, Halpin joins Justice of the Peace Joseph Petro and former Mayor W. H. Vanoster in a three way race. In Elyria, Leonard A. Terry files for two school board seats alongside Julia Martin and Ruth Bridgeland. Terry works at National Tube Co. and has two McKinley students.

Woman Struck By Auto Receives Laceration Injuries

Mrs. Oscar J. Pixley, 50, of 445 East Broad street, was hit while crossing in front of her home. She received lacerations to the head, shoulder, knee, and ankle. treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital and discharged. The driver, Byron Dagne of 22% Winckles street, said he was traveling 20 to 25 mph and could not avoid striking her.

Sales Taxes Rise in Lorain County Six Months

A report by State Treasurer Clarence H. Kinsley shows Lorain County collected about 368,126.94 in sales tax receipts for the first half of this year, up from 355,219.48 in the same period of 1936. July totaled 19,088, versus 16,507 in July 1936, making July the county’s best retail month.

68 Children Examined At Today's Clinic

Today at Gates Hospital for Crippled Children 68 children were examined including two infantile paralysis victims. A 98-year-old Lorain County boy and a 14-year-old from Huron County were expected to be admitted for after treatment. The clinic noted 24 new cases and ongoing progress for others. next clinic set for September 17.

Japan Is Heavy Buyer of Arms in First Half Year

Washington reported the commerce department data showing Japan bought large quantities of munitions abroad in the first half of the year. The move pushed Japan’s unfavorable trade balance to 176 million, 600 thousand dollars, the highest since 1924.

Dope Kit Found Ties To Avon Kidnap Robbery Ruse

Dope kit found near Stop 86 by a boy sparked investigation into a five bandit kidnapping of a Lorain couple, car theft, and a morning gas station robbery at Lake Avenue and Griswold Road. Authorities link kit contents to possible narcotics and a later AVON area shack case, with deputies watching for a return of the suspect. The kit included powder, tablets, a cream, and a woman's shoe print was noted nearby.

Duplex Manufacturing and Foundry offers stay or strike ends

The Duplex Manufacturing and Foundry Company will withdraw its offer to employees on Tuesday September 7 1937 unless accepted. The plant with 110 workers shut August 23 after a strike. President Lloyd Brown states the offer was made due to rising costs and warns of returning all patterns to customers if not accepted.

State School Funds Being Distributed County Totals Reach 195587

State school funds for Lorain County and its towns are being distributed as notes ranging from 24.14 to 8282.54. The county system totals 66702 and all county and Elyria Oberlin Lorain schools total 195587. Deductions for the State Teachers' Retirement System are taken from these notes. The Wellington Schools receive 8282.94 the largest note while Russia Township gets 24.14. Other amounts include Avon Lake 3270.38 Avon 2531.58 and many townships noted.

Chest Clinics At Pleasant View Sanatorium Begin Wednesday

Pleasant View Sanatorium will start a fall schedule of X-ray and chest clinics next Wednesday per Dr. Dean H. Minnis, superintendent. No appointments before that date. Afterward, X-ray clinics run each Wednesday and Saturday morning from 9 to 11, chest clinics from 1 to 3 p.m., and the first Wednesday evening of each month from 7 to 8.
