Elena strengthens into major hurricane near Gulf Coast

Elena, after being stalled at sea for two days, grew to a 125 mph hurricane and aimed at the Gulf Coast. Evacuations were ordered for about 250,000 in Florida's Panhandle and 175,000 on Alabama's coast, with additional orders in parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. Warnings stretched 500 miles from Yankee Town to Grand Isle, and forecasters predicted landfall between Pensacola and Mobile before dawn. National Guard units were deployed to manage returning evacuees as flooding threatened western Florida and the Panhandle.
