Khadafy vows nuclear threat in anniversary speech
Libyan leader Muammar Khadafy warned the United States of nuclear retaliation if bases or ships are attacked during his 12th year in power. In a Green Square rally, crowds chanted anti US slogans as Libyan forces paraded with Soviet tanks and missiles. Sophie the last Cascade Park bear dies at Elyria park
Sophie a longtime Cascade Park black bear, the last of Elyria’s bears since 1920, died early Tuesday from old age after a week of rheumatism treatment. Parks director Phillip Innes said Sophie had long been a park mascot and referenced the 1956 arrival of the recreation director, Charles Hoagland. The city once kept up to four bears, but in 1979 after Gracie’s death the parks board moved away from the zoo business and rejected a free European brown bear offer.
