Tax payment time extended to September 15
County Treasurer-elect Walter Wright announced the extension of the tax payment period to September 15 before penalties. He will close the tax books on September 16 and begin a 10 percent penalty from that date as required by law. Treasurer N. D. Backus reported total collections to date at 1.328 million and urged a minimum 2.0 million by book close to maintain district functions. The year’s total to date for real estate, special assessments and public utilities tax is 2.516 million, with current tax slated for 4.322 million.

Dead, 9 Hurt in Train Wreck Near Zanesville
Nine people were killed or injured when 15 loaded coal cars derailed from the Baltimore and Ohio line near Pleasant Valley west of Zanesville Ohio. A broken axle caused the wreck. Carl F. Dingley of Nashport Ohio was identified among the dead.

H. L. Storer brakeman for the New York Central railroad, of 312 Oxford Avenue, fell 35 feet from a culvert into a ravine while testing brakes east of Erie Pennsylvania. He sustained a broken leg a broken arm a dislocated elbow and multiple cuts and was rescued by fellow trainmen then rushed to St. Vincent hospital in Erie where he is recovering.

De Pinedo Dies In Nonstop Baghdad Flight Attempt
Floyd Bennett Field, New York, Sept 2. Francesco De Pinedo, famed Italian aviator, perished when his Bellanca monoplane crashed on takeoff during a solo attempt to Baghdad. The craft struck a fence, burst into flames, and he was dead on recovery. He hoped to set a long distance record, having crossed four continents and flown Rome to Tokyo and Melbourne.
