Campaign to Stop TV Violence Targets Sponsors
A Church of Christ led campaign, Clean Up TV, seeks sponsor boycotts of ads on shows it labels offensive. The effort threatens to mobilize up to 500,000 members across 6,000 congregations to pressure General Foods, American Home Products, and Warner-Lambert to drop advertising. The group cites programs like Soap and Dallas as examples and says the campaign is not censorship, but a right to object to funding offensive material. Talks with companies extended beyond July 17 deadline as negotiations continued.

General Foods defends advertising policy amid TV boycott debate
Hart warns of a potential boycott if meetings fail, with other denominations considering action. Kathleen MacDonough of General Foods, White Plains, says only 3 percent of ad budget goes to objectionable shows and that the company pulls campaigns found in poor taste. She notes a 20 year policy to sponsor family programs and explains viewer choice and target products like Jell O, Bird's Eye, and Post cereals.
