Storm Halts Elfers Last Lake Erie Swim Try

After 21 hours in 27 miles, Elyria marathoner Bob Elfers was pulled from Lake Erie as a mid-lake storm with lightning hit Grand River area. Winds reached 15 knots, waves up to three feet, ending the attempt to swim 63 miles from Fairport Harbor to Port Stanley Ontario. Elfers, 41, father of five, endured fatigue and muscle weakness, later deemed physically fit by Dr. Gene Bedocs.

Direct U S Cuba Link Opens With Low Key Ceremonies

Ford admits error in 72 fan defect recall delay

Ford Motor Co says it erred in not recalling 424,000 1972 Torinos Montegos and Lincolns with safety risk from fan blades. Investigations show engineers warned of danger years earlier, with a June 3 recall after NHTSA inquiry, and one death plus multiple injuries from blade failures.
