County realty tax to rise with new 40 percent appraisal

Lorain County real estate taxes will increase about five percent next year after the State Board of Tax Appeals set a 40 percent valuation factor up from 38 percent. The county's total appraisal is about 581 million dollars, up 89 million from the prior figure, with residential property comprising roughly half the value. Buildings are valued using 1962 construction costs. Schools receive a special 50 percent adjustment benefiting them, while other levies above the 10 mill limit are reduced to preserve old tax levels.

Explosions Hit Three St Paul Buildings

Three blasts within 45 minutes damaged Gulf Oil, Burlington Northern Rail Lines, and a warehouse near the St Paul Dispatch and Pioneer Press. Initial reports said at least two people were injured and a fourth site was unconfirmed.

Lorain man arrested in beating of Mrs. Crawford

Lorain police arrested 27 year old Edward D. Cardwell of 1333 West Eighth Street in connection with the Aug. 3 beating of Mrs. Linda Crawford. Cardwell was taken from his home about 10 a.m. and faces charges to be filed later. Crawford, found badly beaten in a ditch at West Erie Avenue and Old Oak Point Road, is listed in serious condition but had a good night at St. Joseph Hospital.

Firefighters lose battle to train and water shortage

Elyria firefighters battled a blaze at a partially completed home at 194 Brace Ave. Delays occurred as a train blocked the only hydrant on the east side, delaying arrival of equipment from Station 3 and requiring access from the west side after five minutes. Neighbors reported youths had been inside the house for some time.
