Suspect and girlfriend held to jury in jail escape case
Daniel T. Fels 26 of Elyria and his girlfriend Sandra Shanks 21 of North Ridgeville were ordered held to the Lorain County grand jury on charges tied to an attempted jail escape. Fels faces two escape counts and an aggravated murder-related charge while Shanks is charged with aid to escape and complicity in aggravated murder. A preliminary hearing earlier dismissed one aggravated murder count against Fels. prosecutors must present more evidence on a second count and Shanks’ complicity. Both remain jailed. Fels also faces an escape charge from Elyria Memorial Hospital where he was treated after a prior escape attempt. Fels, arrested Oct. 10, is awaiting trial for the Aug. 20 shotgun death of Milford Shamblin on Rt. 10 in Carlisle Township.
