Soviet sailor returns to USSR after Mississippi incident
Miroslav Medvid, a Ukrainian sailor aboard the Soviet Marshal Konev, told U S officials he chose to return to the Soviet Union voluntarily. He was interviewed near Belle Chasse Louisiana and returned to his freighter, which remained at anchor upriver from New Orleans. The administration declined to explain why Medvid first jumped and why INS agents briefly returned him to the ship despite objections.
