Rome reports a nationwide spontaneous boycott of foreign goods as Italy readies for intensified sanctions against Ethiopia. Government decrees push purchases toward a wartime rationing mindset while public sentiment praises self denial to support the League of Nations campaign.
Elyria News notes 30 organizations will join the Halloween parade tomorrow night as part of Elyria’s celebration. Chief E J Stankard announces parade divisions and assembly points along West, Broad, East and Fourth streets ending at Ely Park. Cider and doughnuts will be given to parade children with free treats at Ely Park for younger attendees.
Partly cloudy conditions expected tonight with slightly warmer readings in the western portion. Thursday looks partly cloudy and warmer before rain moves into the west in the afternoon or evening.
London and Paris plan a possible peace offensive at Geneva to pressure Mussolini and seek to assume full responsibility for outlawed war. Italian forces prepare a northern drive while Ethiopian skirmishes repel advance guards. Rumors of a large battle in the south reach Addis Ababa.
Addis Ababa reports a major battle between Ethiopian and Italian forces on the Ogaden front with unconfirmed word of Italian advances. Ethiopian commandos face strong Italian fortifications while supply and communications gaps hinder rapid concentration of troops and warning of a failed retake.
Rome dispatches say Ethiopian troops mass on the northern front flanks as Ras Neggum prepares a stiff defense in Tembien Northwest with Ras Kessa ready to launch a counter attack near Makale, Italy’s next objective.
The father of Rev. James T. Daler, pastor of St. Mary's church, died yesterday at his home in Cleveland Heights at 2320 Westminster Road. Flor Daley, 59, a retired New York Central railroad engineer born in Ireland, lived in America since age two and retired in 1922 after a celebrated Buffalo to Cleveland run. He is survived by his wife Margaret and six children including William R. Daley, Gilbert F. Dales, Joseph Daley, Anna Louise Daley, and Mrs Frank X. Cull. Funeral 9:29 a.m. tomorrow at St. Anne's Catholic Church Cedar and Coventry Roads. Burial Calvary Cemetery.
London dispatch says Britain and France may launch a Geneva peace offensive to press Mussolini toward reasonable terms or accept greater responsibility for the Ethiopian war. London notes Anglo French unity on league penalties and Mediterranean naval aid with Hoare and Laval traveling to Geneva to discuss sanctions and potential peace moves within days.
London dispatch says Italian forces on the northern front repulsed an Ethiopian attempt to cross the Setit River into Eritrea. About 10,000 Ethiopians attacked the Italian right flank, losing prisoners as Italian scouting parties moved toward Aduwa Makale. Further south Graziani’s columns advance toward Gorrahei with Treasures of Ras Nassibu retreating. Graziani eyes consolidation and push onward.
London reports that Foreign Secretary Sir Samuel Hoare and Captain Anthony Eden confirm there has been and will be no change in Britain's policy on the Italian-Ethiopian matter. Hoare spoke before departing for Geneva, stating continued joint agreement between the two officials.
Three Elyria Credit Rating Bureau directors were elected at the annual dinner at the Elks City Restaurant. Elected are Leror Reisinger of the Chronicle Telegram, John Merkler of the Ohio Public Service Company, and Frank Verbeck of the C. H. Morphe Company, to serve with four chamber appointees: George Day, Colonel J. Helfrich, Alex Altfeld, and Ernest Crisp. A talk by G. C. Driver urged safe credit practices emphasizing asset-based lending, character, capital, ability, and confidence, and urged local business cooperation with the bureau.
In San Francisco on October 20 doctors urged public cooperation to suppress cancer, calling it Public Enemy No. 1. They compared cancer cells to lawless gangsters and urged reporting suspicious cases early for rapid treatment using surgery, radium, and X rays. They cited records of 25,000 patients cured when treated before malignancy advanced, with 120,000 annual deaths and 490,000 living with the disease. New president Dr. Donald C. Balfour warned against false cancer cures and urged proper medical care.
Two Cleveland deaconesses from the Metropolitan Church Association were injured in a two vehicle collision at Route 2 and Columbia Station road yesterday at 4 39 p m One woman Mildred Pennington 32 suffered a broken hip arm and possible internal injuries and was in Berea hospital The other, Ester Jasmer 27, had a severe forehead laceration and multiple bruises Their car overturned after a machine driven by William R Phillips of Pittsburgh struck it. the women said they were talking and did not notice they were on a main highway
Lorain County farmers joined with milk producers from surrounding counties in Cleveland area meetings to press for a higher wholesale milk price. A Wakeman group formed to organize 15 counties in the Cleveland milkshed, with J G White elected chairman. Farmers demand $1.92 per hundred pounds, rejecting a $1.75 offer and threatening to dump milk if prices stay low.
Robert Lannert, Elsha High School graduate and Indiana Technical College student, was struck by a car near Fort Wayne during fraternity initiation last Thursday night. He suffered serious injuries, was driven outside town, blamed on dense fog, and returned home to Cronet on Saturday. He previously lived at 1620 Middle Avenue and graduated Elyria High School on June 1, 1934.
Washington October 30 The Department of Commerce approved construction and improvement of 259 airports with PWA money Assistant Secretary Johnson said today The 250 airports approved by the commerce department are part of a building and improvement program for 730 airports nationwide funded by the federal government
The Lorain county board of commissioners and County Relief Director Earle Duncan urged state or federal aid to care for about 200 unemployable relief families until the county can use its 144 000 relief bond issue to fund support. Officials noted 6 million dollars in undistributed sales tax relief funds may help, and Lorain has 1400 relief cases with 150 unemployable while Elyria lists 474 with 32 unemployable.
MADISONVILLE Kentucky October 30 three bulkloads of armed men moved through towndestination Mannington where about 1690 pickets were repulsed by National Guardsmen last night. M K Gordon attorney for the Jam Coal company said telegrams from western Kentucky communities warned that other groups were mobilizing.
Election board officials announced that Saturday is the final day for casting ballots by absentee and disabled voters. Those unable to reach the polls or away from the city on election day have until 3 p m Saturday to vote under the law.
In Washington, October 40, District Supreme Court Justice Jesse Adkins granted James W. Carter a temporary injunction restraining Carter Coal Co stockholders from complying with the Guffey Coal Act. He also denied Carter a temporary injunction to stop government collection of the noncompliance penalty.
At Wright Field Dayton a giant Boeing bomber crashed during takeoff and caught fire. Lieutenants Harman and Giovanpoli rescued five crew members while Major Plover Hill was pulled free with critical injuries. A board led by Gen Robins investigates the cause as others escape with non life threatening injuries.
The American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps at their first regular meeting since the national convention in St Louis elected officers for 1932. President Wm C Sadro vice president Evans manager and secretary A J Simpson treasurer H D Bill Evans accepted manager duties with ideas to bind the corps to 48 members and revamp routines. The group aims to compete with top corps nationally and join Cleveland next year for the national contest. They will celebrate Halloween in costume.
The Spain County Schools athletic program will be the principal topic when county schoolmasters gather at Clearview School next Wednesday night for the first meeting of the 1935 36 year. The club includes all county teachers and the event will be mainly social with a dinner and recreational features planned.
