Sisters of Mercy Sail on Red Cross
Long before the United States entered WWI the American Red Cross began action. A ship named Red Cross left New York for Falmouth, England, in September 1916 carrying nurses and medical supplies to Europe. The ship faced suspicion from British cruisers but was allowed to proceed, symbolized by a red cross beacon. Nurses and equipment crossed the Atlantic for four years, earning praise from diverse peoples, including an elder Turkish Hodja who commended mercy and kindness.
