Winter outlook heads toward cooler north and drier southeast
NOAA researchers say this winter will feature cooler than normal conditions in western Canada and the northern United States and drier weather along the Gulf Coast. Southeast dryness may contrast with a colder North, as El Nino ends and Pacific warming subsides. An international conference will form a working group to study climate forecasting uses.

Joe Camel to pause billboard ads through year end
Joe Camel will be removed from all billboard advertising through the end of the year, per The News & Observer. RJR spokeswoman Maura Ellis says the break keeps the character fresh though print ads and some retail materials will continue, with a neon-outlined revival planned. The timing is not tied to FDA underage smoking rules, despite anti smoking critics’ views on the mascot’s appeal to youth.
