A bipartisan settlement on sweeping civil rights legislation emerged after Republican senators told President Bush they would not accept racial politics in the 1992 campaign. The compromise restores workplace anti discrimination protections but caps damages in intentional discrimination cases. Bush hailed the agreement after days of closed door talks and exchanges with Senate leaders.
Sen Edward Kennedy acknowledged faults in his private life and pledged lifestyle reforms to avoid interfering with his Senate duties. In a candid speech he addressed lingering questions about his flamboyant social life while signaling dedication to his causes as he nears his 60th birthday.
Elyria mayoral hopefuls clash at a YWCA City Club forum over privatizing garbage collection. Mayor Keys accuses challenger Jo Ann Eichenlaub of harming city workers, saying minority staffing rose under his tenure, while independent Cart warns privatization would raise costs and undo city services.
Elyria residents report a fifth crash on South Gateway between West River Road and Second Street since February. Douglas A. Davis, 18, of Lake Avenue, lost control and struck a tree at 112 South Gateway at 9 30 p m. He was cited for failure to maintain control and treated for minor injuries at Elyria Memorial Hospital. The Paxtons say speed and wet pavement fuel the danger, noting a downed light pole on a neighbor's lawn from June.
