The Labor Department reports September consumer prices rose 1.1 percent with energy and housing costs driving the gain. Gasoline up 3.5 percent and heating oil up 5.6 percent, housing costs 1.2 percent, food 0.9 percent led to a 13.2 percent annual rise for the first nine months of 1979.
Citibank of New York lifted its prime lending rate to a record 15 percent, a three-quarter point rise, signaling the surge in rates may not have peaked as it outpaced the broader industry by a quarter point.
