President Truman urged a worldwide disarmament pact at the United Nations as a path to prevent a third world war. He warned against one sided disarmament and said democracies must rearm until an effective system is in place. He proposed a post disarmament plan for mutual aid and stability.
Elyria’s Community Chest closes its 34th Red Feather drive with pledges totaling 117 478 75 dollars, surpassing the 1951 goal by 9 628 75 and marking the second highest collection in city history. Campaign chair George Cole Jr and about 100 volunteers celebrate at the YMCA luncheon as divisions report solid over quotas and plans to continue through the week.
Reports from Wonsan and Pyongyang describe American pilots seeing a large movement south from Manchuria toward Kangrye as Korean Communist troops may have been trained in China. U S forces report Chinese anti aircraft fire near the border as Marines patrol inside Korea and allied forces push toward Sinuiju from the Chongchon region amid advances toward the Yalu.
Clyde Red Cook of 1134 East River Street remains hospitalized at Berea Community Hospital after a two truck collision on Route 10 October 2. His right leg is fractured and his right arm mangled while his wife remains in serious condition.

Elyria High School pupils held a UN Day assembly with Reverend Henry K. Shaw of the First Christian Church delivering the address on the United Nations. Students from grades ten to twelve pledged support for worldwide democracy tied to the UN Charter signed in San Francisco five years ago. Allyn Rose chaired the event with two students, Sandra Warmee and Dick Larkin, participating and presenting on the UN Flag. Principal speaker Rev. Shaw shared insights from his observations of the General Assembly.
A meeting of New York Central railroad engineers, state highway officials, and county commissioners discussed replacing the old wooden bridge on Route 10 over the New York Central Railroad. Officials said no formal complaint existed before last September and plans for a new structure are under way for federal approval before railroad review. Attendees included A M Westenhoff and G C Lindsey of the New York Central, State Highway Department members, Ridgeville township trustee Charles Falkner, County Engineer Don E Patterson, and Commissioners R J Fortney, Oscar Dunn, and J Norman Thompson.
Elyria Post No 49 of the Disabled American Veterans will meet this evening at the Amvets post home on Broad Street. Garrett Bow en national service officer will be guest to answer questions about claims for disabled veterans. Meeting scheduled at 7 p m.
In Pyongyang Prison four pits held hundreds of bodies believed to be political prisoners killed by the Communists. American POW teams spoke with liberated inmates and locals who described mass graves with arms and legs protruding. Estimates put the dead around 1,300, with some victims said to have been buried alive.
SAN FRANCISCO Al Jolson beloved entertainer known for Mammy and Sonny Boy died of a heart attack last night in a hotel suite. The 64 year old star had toured vigorously since the war began and recently returned from a frontline visit to Korea. Jolson, born to a cantor in St Petersburg, left a note of humor as his life ended during a game of gin with friends at the St Francis hotel. His wife, Mrs Jolson, collapsed on hearing the news at their Encino home as Jolson prepared for funeral plans in California. He had flown from Hollywood with Harry Akst and Martin Fried to appear on Bing Crosby’s show tonight.
The Colson Corporation nears acquisition of Swartzbaugh Manufacturing’s Ideal Food Conveyor business of Toledo Ohio. Negotiations stretched long with terms agreed subject to final details and director approval. Colson would manufacture these conveyors in the Truck Division at the Etyria plant.
Charlies R. Scott, fire defense coordinator for Civilian Defense in the Ohio Fire Marshal's office, told 228 Lorain County residents at a safety conference dinner that the atomic bomb is not as terrible as many think. He noted early fears and said recent tests show it is not all superior, addressing concerns at Elyria Country Club sponsored by the Lorain County Industrial Safety Council.
A burglary at Dr. J. T. Fawces office in the Lorain County Bank building netted about 470.50 from a safe in the UAC office. The thief used a combination written on a card kept on a filing cabinet after ransacking the space. Police were investigating leads yesterday.
Elyria police say confessions from two 17 and 18 year old youths tied to a gang of four plus two captured earlier in Missouri and Illinois helped solve multiple local burglaries and car thefts. They list robberies at Roll Arena Farm Store Tower and Carlisle Dine In theaters and Route Tit area, boosting arrests and detailing past incidents.
An eight car Lackawanna passenger train derailed near Delwood, Lancaster, injuring crewman James R Shaw, 65, of Elmira. Initial reports described serious injury to one trainman while several passengers were shaken up.
The Justice Department moves to enforce the registration of the Communist Party amid defiance and new laws. A petition and facts will be prepared to compel registration after hearings, with potential penalties and further action against top alien Communists and deportation orders under a broadened legal framework.
Pfc Walter Coen, 219 Winckles Street, was killed in Korea on September 19 after being wounded on September 16 and sent back into action. He married last June and had served overseas two years and was due for discharge. He attended Elsha High School and enlisted at 17. Surviving are his wife, parents, a brother, and two sisters.
Amelia Cox of Amherst as administratrix of John Scott estate reports a burglary at his Huntington Quary Road home. A General Electric refrigerator a 22 Caliber rifle electric drill a blanket and an antique lamp were taken from the unoccupied house, entered likely by key. Nearby, aluminum roofing eaves spouting four sections barbed wire two chicken feeders were found along the road. the home has been empty since Scott’s death.
