Smith of Ohio State University cites a temporary improvement in the milk to feed ratio, aided by good pasture and sound feeding practices. He notes the ratio is below the long-term average but stabilized by price supports and recent production near a record high. He also cites potential short supplies of cotton seed meal as a factor in feed costs.

Protein Supplements Lower Hog Production Costs

Farmers with abundant grain may consider feeding corn alone and skipping protein supplements. Experiments show corn alone requires 11 to 12 bushels per 100 pounds of pork yield, while a balanced ration with protein allows 100 pounds of pork from 5.5 to 6 bushels of corn plus 50 pounds protein. With current prices, each corn bushel in a supplemented ration is worth $2.25 to $2.75, versus $1.50 to $1.75 for corn alone. Hogs fed grain and a balanced supplement reach market weight in about five-and-a-half to six months.
