State reports 1300 psychiatric patients enter Ohio nursing homes yearly
The state Department of Mental Health says about 1,300 psychiatric patients annually enter nursing homes under a 30 day convalescent rule. The rule lets admissions be signed by a doctor without independent reviews, with 40 percent in Cuyahoga County. William O Boyle alleges Medicaid fraud by Saber Healthcare, claiming ineligible patients stay while Medicaid stipends continue. Saber denies the charges and argues housing and housing criteria affect patient care. Housing for the mentally ill remains scarce in Ohio.
