Heavy rains flood Las Vegas and Southwest regions
Gully washing rains drenched the Southwest with thunderstorms across Nevada Arizona New Mexico and Utah. Las Vegas traffic halted for hours as underpasses flooded and some homes suffered water damage though major buildings remained unharmed. Up to a quarter inch fell in Douglas Arizona and Gallup New Mexico as unseasonably warm autumn weather persisted from the Rockies to the Ohio Valley.

Milan schools seek two mill operating levy on ballot
The Berlin Milan School District, hit by a $5.6 million tax valuation loss, places a two mill operating levy on the November ballot. An earlier two mill emergency levy had provided about $115,000 annually, keeping the district barely solvent before AT&T reduced valuation and cut revenue by about $156,000 annually. The new levy would raise about $106,000 yearly, funding may delay bus purchases and equipment while awaiting state aid. Bronson Township to vote on zoning referendum with crabapples and amendments by trustees.

Lorain names Peggy Walter acting chief probation officer
Margaret Peggy Ann Walter, 27, is appointed Lorain Municipal Court acting chief probation officer. She fills the vacancy after Mich ael Schotz resigned to become an insurance agent. Walter joined the department May 4, 1977, and is paid with county CETA funds as city control of the office begins. Permanent appointment not expected until next month.
