Spinks in Elyria Faces Failure to Control Charge After Corvette Crash

Former heavyweight champ Leon Spinks, in Elyria for privacy, damaged a 1979 Corvette on Route 57 near the Holiday Inn, driving through a fence. He and a bodyguard were uninjured. he was brought to the police station to post bond and later returned to his hotel.

Bay Village man dies in Fremont jet crash

A twin engine corporate jet crashed in a cornfield near Vickery Sandusky County killing three people including Earl W Murphy 58 of Bay Village FAA inspector Neal Blasse 29 of Stow and co pilot Gemmill Davis from the Greater Cleveland area Investigators from FAA NTSC and Ohio Highway Patrol secured the scene and planned weekend work to determine the crash cause The plane originated at Richmond Heights to pick up Murphy at Hopkins and test Davis no flight recorders were on board Residents recalled two explosions a large fireball and a loud boom as the jet hit the ground Memorial services for Murphy will be held Monday at St Barnabas Episcopal Church in Bay Village.

Swihart appeals insanity claim in Ohio death case

Akron judge panel hears Michael Swihart defense arguing mental illness at time of killings of his mother Sue and brothers Rasell 9 and Brian 16 and that death sentence should be overturned. Prosecutor counters that prof med terms cited are not recognized disorders and notes Swihart acted with bold directed logic after the murders. Swihart was convicted of Rasell and sentenced to death while receiving life terms for Sue and Brian and 7 to 25 years for the arson. The death sentence had previously been overturned by the Supreme Court ruling on Ohio death penalty.

Wright given life plus 240 years in Florida case

Richard A. Wright was sentenced by Paseo County Florida circuit judge Edward Bergstrom Jr to life imprisonment plus 240 years for Kidnapping and eight counts of rape connected to the November 1977 abduction of Linda I Sharpe. Prosecutors sought nine consecutive terms but received eight. Wright must serve one third of his sentence before parole.
